The steamer Murray, contrary to her usual custom, proceeded direct from Westport to Hokitika, and arrived in Greymouth from the latter port on last evening's tide. She is expected to sail this afternoon for Westport and Nelson.

Mention of recovery of cargo from the wreck of tho ship Loch Levcn is now seldom made, but the ketch Ellen and Elizabeth, which went to King'B Island a Bhort time kgo, returned from the scene of the wreck with a quantity of wool and leather, and some tens of woolpacks and old rope. [ An experiment was mode lately at Cole's wharf, Melbourne, in the presence of several practical men, of some recently patented improvements in anchors, invented by Captain Thomson, harbot master at the Bluff, N.Z. Small models of the anchors, were exhibited, and the experiments tried with them upon some ground specially prepared fc the purpose. The principal feature in the invention consists of the crown being made with a Btraight back instead of a curve, and with arms at each end at right angles. The crown is attached crosswise to a double shank, which with the stock forms a triangle. The advantages claimed for the improved anchor are that it holds more readily, and that there is less liability of the chain fouling. It is also easily stowed away. In the opinion of the gentlemen present the experiments .were very satisfactory. Captain Thomson, whose infontic n is to proceed to England almost immediately, has given instructions for an anchor to be formed on bis model at Lauglands's foundry. A more practical test may then be made.— Age, March 22.
