Melbourne— The Argus, of the 19th inst, reports :—
In the import markets, trade is assuming a more active and buoyant appearance. Breadstuffs are dull, and it is with difficulty that any sales at all can be effected. Flour has beeu got rid of at Ll2 12s 6d, and the millers are now generally offering town manufactured at Ll2 15s. Oats are quiet, buyers being exceedingly backward. Maize is treated with the utmost neglect, and our quotation of 3s 5d to 3s GJ is quite nominal. ■Sugars are very firm, holders requiring higher raten, and being very sanguine on this score do not care to conciliate buyers. # The Chateanbriand, just arrived from Mauritius, brings dates to 6th February. AllthevesBelß previously reported as loading for the colonies bad left with the exception of the Ophir, which was to take her departure on the Bth February for Geelong. The market was very firm, but no actual change in prices had occurred, though holders were fully in the expectation of a farther rise. Sales of Devoe s kerosene oil continue to be reported at Is 9{d. A shipment of galvanised iron, plain, has been Bold to arrive at the extreme figure of L3O 10s. In teas, for which there is a moderate inquiry, we note sales privately at 16d to IBd for good to medium congous At the sale of bonded goods in Masterton's estate this forenoon, congous realised from 10|d to 103 d, and ll^d to Is 6|d for dusty and broken leaf to good medium in chests and halves, while boxes brought Is 3d to Is 7d. At same time, Hennessy's pale brandy sold at 6s 4id, Martell'a dark at 6s 74d, and Associated Vineyard at 4s lO&d. Hum brought 2s 9d to 3s for good to best brands, and JDKZ geneva sold at 11s 9d.
