The steamer Charles Edward returned from Hokitika yesterday, bringing a large number of passengers for this port and Westport. To her northern passengers a large accession was made at this port by the departure of numbers of Westport and Nelson residents who had been present at the races, and two of tbe horses were also shipped by her for Nelson. The steamer Alhambra, which arrived at the Bluff yesterday, in not expected to be despatched from Greymouth, for Melbourne, until the 20th inst. The whaler Europa, in which the boatsteerer was murdered by a Portugese lad, has arrived at Russell The accused will be taken to America for trial .Of the ships in port, the City of Dunedin and Warrior Queen are filling up for London, and will be followed by the Jessie Readman, and tbe Margaret Galbraith. The Readman is all but discharged, while the Galbraith has juat made a good commencement. The barque Seagull has been chartered to proceed to Hong Kong, at a lump sum. About the middle of April Another vessel is wanted for the same route. The Polly Lewis, after discharging, goes to Newcastle, N.B.W, and loads for Shanghai. The Heloise, from British Columbia, alsoproceeds to Newcastle to load coal for San Francisco. The Clairellen's destination is not known. — Otago Daily Times, March 15. . Towards the conclusion of the trial of Capt. Collard of the Sussex, the Judge said that if he passed a severe sentence the words would be hardly out of his month before tbe Executive would be asked to release the defendant. — — lUo^r^TrSy pTcn übii/io me aeienUaufc Trao i *u — moved from the dock, the Attorney-General was waited upon, and asked to recommend a remission of the punishment. Mr Walsh declined to give any promise, but recommended the deputatiomsts to petition the Executive Council. The Chief Secretary was subsequently interviewed upon the subject, and a memorial in favor of Captain Collard is being signed. From the next day's issue of the Argus we glean that the memorial to the Governor, praying for a commutation of the sentence, was on the next day handed by Captain H. A. Coffey and another gentleman to the hon. the Chief Secretary, forpresentation to his Excellency. . It bad been lying at the Chamber of Commerce and other places in town since sentence was passed, and the signatures of the document filled five pages of foolscap. Mr Duffy, on receiving it. promised thai it should be forwarded with all possible speed.
