The 8.8. Kennedy arrived on Saturday afternoon from Nelson via Hokitika, and sailed for Westport at 2 a.m. on Sunday.' The pj. Charles Edward, from Nelson and Westport, arrived off the bar yesterday morning, avd came to the wharf on the tide. She brings a large number of passengers for the race meeting, bhe will go south, and call here on her way to Westport and Nelson. The steamer Murray sailed on Saturday morning for fiokitika, and returned to port yesterday afternoon. A new steamer called the Southern Cross was launched from Messrs Duthie and Boss's shipbuilding yards, Smailes' Point, near Auckland, on March 7. She has been built for the coasting trade between Auckland, Tauranga, and Opotiki. Her dimensions are—Length, 94ft Bin; beam, 16ft: depth of hold, 7ft 6in; carrying capacity, about 70 tons, and engines of 30 horse-power. She will have sleeping accommodation for about 40 saloon passengers.
