MwAoubnb.— The Jrffiuoi the 6tn inst. says '.— In the import market a fair inquiry for goods is reported, and a moderate amomnt of business has come under oar notice. Breadstuffs are very quiet. For tradepurposes best brands of flour are quitted at Ll2 15s to Ll3. We hear of no inquiry for parcels, but buyers are not inclined to give over Ll2 lOj for country brands, though a trifle more money is asked. Wheat 13 steady ab 5s 6d to fit 7d for prime samples, bnt there is really much lew eoqernees to operate evinced by
millers ; this disinclination is, however, of a t-mporary character. Oats are unchanged; there is no demand, and there is nothing doing but for trade purposes at unaltered ra*er say 3s .to 3s 4d for common to good : sorts. Maize is moved off at 3s 8d L- .;...eels to 3s 9d for small lots. A conBidurable business has been done in sugar. Of Java sorts some 4297 mats were cleared off this afternoon under the hammer at L3l 10s to L3l 15s for browns, L3l 5s to lit. for low Counters. 1000 mats Bourbon rations sold at L 23 ss. The Alexandra's cargo of Mauritius sugarsold will be offered publicly to-morrow forenoon. Teas are decidedly firmer, and there is more general inquiry exper.enced in the market. We hear of a line of 600 half cheats medium congous having beeu placed at 1b 4Jd, and of the Gustav Adolf's shipment submitted to competition in the morning, the auctioneers succeeded in disposing of 2000 half-chests and boxes, at Is Oid to Is 3^d for common to low medium congous. 234 D bags Java Boedhi Rajah rice, sold as per sample, realised Ll9 15a to L2O. j JS. strong demand for fish is maintained. Sales of lib fresh herrings are freely mado privately at 8s to Is 3d. Metals obtain a good deal of attention. A shipment of 22 tons galvanised corrugated iron, 26 gauge, orb brand, was placed at the extreme figure of L 32. Some time ago we noted an improved inquiry for tin plates. We hear of salep of available lots at 4ls to 42s for I. C. coke, and at 45s for I. C. charcoal ; other Bizes in proportion. Patent nails have also been looked upon with favor, and we learn of 1200 kegs having been taken up by a speculative buyer, on terms withheld. Sales of fine salt are reported publicly at L 4 12s 6d for fine, stoved, and 13 13s for coarse. Candles are scarcely so firm; we are notified that the Neva Company have reduced the price of their brand to Is from 12.} d. In liqnidß we note salea of 10 o.p rum, outside brand, at 3s. Christchurcii.—The Lyttelton Times, of the 9th inst., reports :— In the grain market a busy week has been noticeable. Exports to the north are being made on an extensive scale, and we also observe several large parcels of wheat have gone forward to Sydney. An improved demand has transpired for wheat during the week, and quotations have shown, an upward tendency. The millers are giving 4s 3d for picked samples, and for medium 4s to 4s Id is reported to have been given. The merchants are somewhat chary in buying at the advances noted, but with the increased tonnage to England now available, and also the prospect of a reduction iv the rate of freight, we have little doubt that the above quotations will soon (become general. Oats are not in really good request, although prices hav6 not receded. Melbourne quotatiens tend somewhat to check speculation for the present. Large parcels have gone forward to Melbourne Toy the Rangitoto and Albion. We now quote for prime milling samples, la 9d to Is 9£d for early delivery, and Is lOd to 28 is giveu for pressing requirements. Barley continues in good request, but the farmers are getting less anxiouß to quit unless at rates which exporters cannot afford to pay. Sales have transpired at 4s up to 4s 3d. Butter is moving off vei-y freely at 6|d to 7d, according to condition ; prime samples are getting scarce. Hams and bacon meet with good support at 7d to 7Jd. Cheese is gettii g leas plentiful, and we look for higher rates to rule soon.
