ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. CLAUD HAMILTON.

Hokitika, March 13. The s.s. Claud Hamilton, Rouse, commander, arrived at eight o'clock ithis morning. She leit Melbourne on the evening of the 6th. Melbourne, March 6. Messrs Yogel and Webb had : another interview with Mr Duffy, and submitted modified proposals relative to the mail service. The proposal is under consideration, "and there' 'is more probability of an arrangement. Mr M'Cul.loch has resigned his seat. He is going home, in the steamer Northumberland. Purves, a young barrister, and Everard Henty are candidates for the vacancy. Mr Trollope' is visiting Western Australia. He returns by the next mail boat. • Judge Macoboy is dead. It is believed that Mr Dunne succeeds him. A man named Henry Pensom has been i murdered at Daylesford by a relative named James Wilkie. He was shot, and thrown into a 400 ft deserted shaft. . The body stuck amongst the timbering 12ft down, and, being seen, was got up. Wilkie was committed for trial. Mr Longmore has gone to Queensland to see the working of the narrow guage railway principle. The case of Clarson and wife against Doctor Blair, for an alleged indecent assault committed five years since, was brought to an end after five days' trial, by a verdict in favor of defendant. Taylor killed Robinson in a : pugilistic encounter near Sandhurst on Sunday last. A man named Johnston attempted to kill his wife and himself at Sandridge. Sydney, March 5. A Newcastle company lias reduced the price of coal to seven shillings per ton. A lode of tiu ore six feet wide has been struck in Cope's Creek. Irvine, a mining speculator from Tambaroora, ; is missing. It is suspected he met with foul play. Adelaide, March 5. News by the Omeo from the Roper river says the Omeo steamed sixty, and was towed forty miles further up the river. Todd says the horse express will shortly I be established. '
