NEW RIVER DISTRICT.
[from our own correspondent.] March 13. It is reported that the Honohula "Water Race is likely to- be extended on to the terraces at the Eight-Mile, Clifton, and that the managers have already been over the ground. Unquestionably if this is done it will prove of inestimable value tpthe^district, and tend greatly to further the mining interest. At the rush that took place a short time since at the back of 'the Cemetery at Clifton, which is called the Niagara Terrace, a number of the men got protection from the Warden under the frontage sytem on the last Court day. M'Pherson and Co., the prospectors, are the only party yet on gold. They have had one washing and the result is said to^be satisfactory. There are about thirtjrmen on the ground and several tunnels are being taken in. ; ■ The leng shoot party sustained considerable damage during the great flood. Mining round Maori Creek is progressing. Donegal Terrace still continues to be favorably spoken of. Cariboo Creek maintains its .usual population, and the .steady systematical manner in which the miners pursue their vocation shows that they .must be well rewarded for their labor, i; At No-Name mining : appears to be the "" same as formerly, and although this place was said -years ago to be worked out, a . good population is to be. found there, making ordinary wages. The contractors frr that portion of the road between No Name and Marsden are making great progress with their, section. They have been able to get all the piles for the bridge over the New River alongside the tram and in the neighborhood. They expect in the course i of a 'month to have the bridge so far advanced^ tHat foot ; passengers will b& able to cross over. People |want to know what becomes of the surplu3 money after paying- expenses for the collection, &c., of the tolls on the Marsden and Clifton road J 'It is only right v and -fair to the district jif any remains . after paying expenses, that it should be kid out on the road. No doubt when the County Council meet a return will be asked showing the money received for tolls, and how it has been expended. The toll was originally levied for the pur- * pose of keeping the road in repair, and not to make a special revenue but of it ; therefore, if there is any surplus over that is not necessary to be; laid ont on the road, why not reduce the tolls, so that the public niay be benefited. Why should the New River district have a special tax laid on it, without receiving additional benefits in return. .■■;•. .. ; :
