THE INANGAHUA REEFS.
Wje^Cull^^oia-^lie-^HETaZtLaeimo-Jwioj* items of news relating to reefs and Reefton:— • On Monday, the Camp Reserve wtis thrown open for occupation under' business licenses. Three sections at the eastern, and three sections at the western end, are reserved for public purposes. Immediately upon the notice beinej posted outside the Camp that the reserve had been thrown open for selection a monster rush took place for the sections, and pegs were put in amid a scene that beggars description. For every favored site there were fully a dozen claimants, and in one section we noticed not fewer than forty pegs. The, disputes necessarily terminated in blows, and those who the most readily affected pugilistic tendencies succeeded in finally securing interim occupation. A perfect harvest of litigation is likely to be furnished by the so-far worsted claimants. • •■■•■•- On the new quartz reef opened up by Murray, at the head of Murray Creek, five claims have been pegged off, two north and two south, in addition to the claim of the discoverers. Early on Tuesday morning friends were laid on and the claims pegged off as above. "Bob the Barber" and his party visited the ground and pegged off a claim. The accounts state that there is every indication of a first-class payable reef. _ It is situated almost a quarter : of a mile south by west of the Westland Company's machine site. The Hon. Mr Reeves, accompanied by Mr Haughton, Gold Fields Secretary, visited ShiePs prospecting claim, and expressed their astonishment at -the extensive preparations for working the mine, when the expense and difficulty of transporting machinery to the ground are taken into consideration. They 'were also most favorably impressed with the payable quality of the reef. -.< .■ The following items relating to the reefing district are from the Westport Times:—- ■ ■ : . We understand that Messrs Morrison .and Co. are the successful tenderers for the formation of that section " of dray road .between: the. Landing and Larry's Creek. Protection has been , granted to Mr Courtenay for the construction of a tramway between the township of Reefton and Black's Point. . Mr Cornfoot's machinery, which has been for some time waiting means of transit, has been at last taken on board Mr White's boat Rose of the Buller. ' There is a large quantity of cargo and ' machinery in waiting. All available boats are busily engaged. It is a pity that several others are not obtainable, as both goods and machinery are badly wanted. By the Kennedy the plant of a steam saw mill arrived en route for Reefton. A very smart whale-boat has been fitted up by Mr Craddook, which he intends for the passenger trade between Westport and the Inangahua. ■
