At Wellington, Wanganni, and Blenheim, according to telegraphic report, there was a fresh breeze blowing from N.W. yesterday morning, and at Nelson a N.E. gale, with rain. At Lyttelton the wind was N.E. and light. Throughout Otago it was calm and cloudy, with rain in the more southerly parts of the Province. At Greymouth, m the afternoon, a stiff nor'-wester prevailed, with squalls and showers. The s.B. Kennedy is expected to arrive here on Saturday morning, and to sail the same evening for Westport and Nelson. The schooner Mary Van Every was advertised in Dunedin on the 16th instant, as on the berth for Greymouth. The schooner Raiuma cleared out at Lyfctelton on tho 17tb, for Hokitika, with a full cargo of produce. The people of tho Manawattt district (Wellington Province) appear to regard the cutter Dawn with superstitious awe, a feeling which has developed itself to such an alarming degree that there is every probability the cutter will have to seek some now sphere of usefulness on account of the growing disinclination to encourage her visits up the river. Our Manawatu correspondent writes:— Yon will have boen informed before now, by my telegram, of the two unfortunate accidents which havo occurred in our river from bathing, and I will not, therefore, repeat the sad tale again. People will be superstitious ; and the poor cutter Dawn bears a fearful namo here— everyone stating that the simplest way to commit suicide is to embark upon that veasel, as within the last twelve months three unfortunate men have lost their lives, namely, Adams, Henderson, and Batt, and they say four others wore drowned off her up at Auckland ; if so, she certainly does seem an ill-fated vessel.
