Christchubch. The Times of the 12th reports :— Breadstuffs arc certainly not so firm as they were a week since, as most of the millers are supplied for a time, and export orders are limited in most cases to a lower figure than current quotations. Buyers of really good samples of wheat are only offering 3s 9d, which, as a rule, .is accepted, although a number of farmers are holding back with the intention of shipping to England. Barley is wanted badly oy the maltsters, who would willingly pay 3s 9d to 4s for good samples. Large sales of oats have been made at Is 9d, and there appears to be a disposition to let values go lower, as, even at this price, shipments to Melbourne would leave no margin. There is only a very limited outlet otherwif e, so that we should not bo surprised to see lower rates ruling shortly. Hams and bacon continue in steady request, at 7d to 7&d. Good old cheese is getting scarce at 3jd, while new is offering freely at#d. Batter is wanted at 4&d to sa, as feed is now very scarce. Of the stock market, the same paper says :— The prices of cattle on Wednesday showed a slight improvement on lost week's rates. The number shown was not large, but included a few good quality fat steers and some good young stock, all of which commanded spirited bidding. Our quotation for prime beef is 17s Cd per lOOlbs. Mutton, Ud per lb.
