THE PROTECTION OF THE TOWN.

''■ ■ ' ' *** —.' '■ [lO THE EDITOR.] Sir— Will you allow meto make another suggestion in reference" to the protective works 1 Those who have resided here for ' any length o£ time must have noticed that the damage done to town property by floods — except in the last case— has been caused entirely by the' backing up of the water in the -tidal' creek which runsthrough the heart of the town. It is therefore evident, that .it will not be sufficient merely to protect the river bank. I would suggest'that a'bank be. formed across the tidal creek at its lower end, and carried over the idjacentlow-ljlngground, so as to keep back the flood and tidal water. A self-acting sluicegate will provide for all ordinary drainage. As the bank will not be sabjected to any scour, the work will not be au expensive one, and should be done at once. Eventually, ■ when the railway is made, the surplus stuff from the cutting through the Gorge should be ran to fill up the creek entirely. This would do away with what is now a source of danger, not .only from floods, but from pestilence, the creek at present being the receptacle of most of the filth from the town and a potent source of danger to the i health oorf r the inhabitants. The creek being filled up will form the best possible line for* the' railway,"^ an easy curve can then be laid out to connect the line up the river, with the reserve already made through, the town" to the, south. I see that the railway at presentis laid out along Ma wihera Quay. It will of course be necessary t.o have a line of rails along the quay for the : coal' traffic, but it will be a great mistake to crowdthe wharf with the ordinal/ traffic of the line.' If the line is laid out along the creek, the general station could be in the very centre of the town. lam,"&c., ""■ . J^mbs Wyldb.
