GREYMOUTH V.M'MECKAN, BLACK WOOD, AND COPS STEAMERS.

[to the editor.] Sir— l noticed in last Saturday's Argus a letter signed C. A. Farwig, calling attention to the disadvantages which this port is subject to in the delivery of goods by M'Meckan, JJlackwood, and Go.'s steamers. Upon careful inquiry 1 find that during the last two years at least consignees in Greymouth have been subjected to the same irregularities, and I must say that, to a certain extent, it serves them right if they allow themselves to be humbugged by the Company's Agent in that manner. If they did not like it, why did they not state their grievance to the principals in Melbourne months ago? No man in his sound senses will believe that M'Meckan, Elackwood, and Co, if they dnew it, would allow their agent, Mr A. JBonar in Hokitika, to send the a.s. Waipara on a trip to Okarita and other places down South, and after her return detain her in Hokitika for a day or two to tender the Alhambra, thereby causing a delay to consignees in Greymouth of about nine days in the delivery of their goods, ex Rangitoto, arrived the 27th January ; and none but Greymouth people would submit to such without a murmur. Mr Bonar could have sent the Greymouth packages on by the Kennedy, or 29th, or byi the Murray, on Thursday, the Ist February. Ho may try to excuse himself by pressure of business in the County Council, but it is very doubtful if such maMttra would be allowed to interfere 'with his duties as their Agent, supposing an action for damages were laid againct the Company by the Greymouth consignees, who must have lost hundreds of pounds by the neglect of their agent during the past twelve months, The writer of this, in the interest of the Greymouth consignees and their customers, is willing to take the necessary steps to remedy this evil ; and communications upon the subject, addressed C. 8., Post Office, Greymouth, will meet with prompt attention. Yours, &c, Importer. ■M— —^^mmm —^ »— o— — «— «t ,J — ■■ ■
