Melbourne. — The Argus of the 22nd instant reports :— In the import markets this forenoon little has been aibwed to come before us in the way of sales. The news to hand by the mail steamer bears tidings of an advance, more or less, in price on almost eveiy description of merchandise, but as it is found to be a most difficult thing in each case to establish a corresponding rise in this market, the circumstance, it is likely, together with the increase in shipments generally, must for some time to come act in a prejudicial manner on trade. It is not therefore surprising to find a feeling of depression prevailing rather thau the reverse. In breads tuffs, flour is got rid of slowly in trade parcels, and lines of 10 tons or so are disposed of at Ll2 Ids to Ll3. New wheat also is in fair request for actual trade purposes at 5s Id to 5s 3d, and parcels as they continue to arrive from the country districts arc readily taken tip at our quotations, Oats are inactive, andthero is nothing of an improving character to refer to ; we quote 3s to 3s Cd. Maize ia firm at 4a. Supplies are still very short of requirements, and though not much business is done, values are very .firmly sustained. The quantity advised in the Rangoon's mail amounted to 3822cwfc, or 191 tons, but as the whole of this must have arrived some time ago, without affecting the buoyancy of the market, it is more than likely that the reference thus made will cause a reaction. Brandon's are quoted at ll|d to 11 K and De Roubaix's at lljd to 11 |d. Corusacks present an evidently advancing tendency ; we do not hear of auy offering under 12s 6d. Woolpacks are scarce, and saleable at 4s 3d to 4s 6(1.
