At the Thames Police Court, on October 24, a young woman of prepossessing appearance said she wanted protection. Mr Paget: What do you want protection for?— Applicant: Against my husband, who has left me and taken up with another woman. Mr Paget : I have nothing to do with that. What property have you ?— Applicant : The furniture, which he has left me. Mr Paget : How long have you been married, and how Ion? has he left you ?—Applicant : We have been married six month?, and he left me a fortnight ago. Mr Paget: You must try and win him back, and if he will not maintain you go to the parish officer, or the relieving officer of the union, who will bring him here if necessary. I cannot give you protection. — A pale-faced; melancholy-looking young man next applied. He had been married nine months, and his wife left him six weeks ago, and took half the furniture with her. Mr Paget : And left you the other half 1 Who is she with ?— ApplU cant: With her mpther^ who left my dwelling at the same time. Mr Paget : You should not have your mother-in-law in your house with your newly-married wife. Applicant : My mother was in the honse at the same time. Mr Paget: Two mothets-in law ! No wonder there was no peace in your house, and that your wife has left you. 1b it only a mere quarrel. I cannot interfere in every little domestic grievance. Ask your wife to return, and get rid of your mother-in-law. Applicant: Can't you compel my wife to return ? — Mr Paget; No, certainly not. Applicant : Oh, dear me. Mr Paget ; Don't Btand sighing there. Go to your wife, and ask her to . return to your; bed and board. I
