COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tuesday, January 23. Mr Fox brought up the report of the Select Committee on Montgomery's petition, which was to the effect that the petitioner's claim lay against '.the -.Nelson Government, aud that he had no claim against the County Government.— The report was read and received. On the motion of Mr Duncan, it was resolved — "That a committee, consisting of Messrs Scanlan, Button, Hoos, aud the mover, be appointed to report upon what roads and tracks are urgently required by the County, aud- submit a statement of same to the Council." The Chairman moved— " That a coin.rnittee, consisting of Messrs Button, Bonar, Fox, and the mover, be appointed to consider the desirability or otherwise of constructing railways, one from Greymouth to Hokitika, the other from Hokitika to Ross ; to report in a fortnight." — Passed without dissent. The Chairman moved— " That a committee be appointed, consisting of Messrs Bonar, Button, Barff, and Hoss, to prepare a petition to the General Assembly, praying ;that the County may be relieved from payment of the Interest and Sinking Fund on the Canterbury Loans, on account of the County having been deprived ef the Customs Revenue, which had been ; made? the. basis of tlie award given by Mr Fitzgerald ; to report in a fortnight."— This was agreed to. Mr Barff moved — " That a select committee, consistiug of Messrs Scanlan, Button, Dungan, and the mover, be aj pointed to inquire into and report upon the question of erecting foot-bridges over certain creeks throughout the County ; to report within a week."
