Thcs.s. Claud Hamilton from Melbourne arrived off Hokitika last evening. Sho will come on here this morning, and will be tendered and dispatched with passengers for Nelson, southern ports and Melbourne. Tho 8.8, Kennedy did not leavo Hokitika yesterday in conseiuenco of the weather. She will come on here this morning, and bo despatched to-night for Westport and Nelson. The p. s. Charles Edward is announced- to leave hero for Westport and Nelson on Tuesday evening next. _ # ' Tho Magnet and Gleaner have arrived in Melbourno from this port, and tho barque . Kate Conley had sailed when the Claud Hamilton left, and may therefore be shortly expected. The Eden correspondent of the Bega Gazette, writing on the 12th instant, gives ' the following exciting account of an incident in whaling Jife :— "The brig Velocity, o£ Hobart Town, arrived in Twofold Bay early on Saturday morning for the purpose of obtaining medical assistance for one of the crew named John Smith, a native of Hobart Town, and one of the smartest whalers on board the vessel. On the previous Monday, Smith met with a severe and nearly fatal accident. The boat he was in was in chase of a whale, and after tho whale had been struck, and whilst the boat w<«s being towed along at a terrific rate, a loop of tho whale line got entangled round Smith's right ankle, and he has dragged overboard, and out of sight in a moment. He was takcu underneath the water twice before ho could free his foot from the lino. When he came to the surface the next time, his mates were fortunately able speedily to take biro into the boat, and then on board the ship."
