AN EXPLANATION.

[to the editor.] Sir — In Tuesday morning's issue of your paper, I am reported as the defendant in a charge laid by the police, and was fined L 2 and costs. The evidence given in Court by the plaintiff (Constable Flannagan) went to shew that he was ai nesting two men who he said had left my house in a state of vitoxication, which was false. Nothing ooiurred in any house that would cause Constable Flannagan to come and "see what was the matter," as he stated. The disturbance that took place in Boundai/ street was between two men whom Constable Fiannagan was ai seating when he called out " Police !" and ' ' Murder !" Hearing those cries, I ran and opened my side bar-doo?, and as the Constible was rat'ving from the fight beaten, he came up and inquired of me, wh ; le I was standing at the door, who the men were. I told him I did not know ; when he said I did. He then told me he would summon me for haying my house open after hours. Now, if a man is fined, as I have been, for opening a wrong door when he hears such cries as were made use of, then there is no use a man attempting to render assistance when required. [ am, &c, Thomas Bailey, Full and Plenty Hotel.
