NEW RIVER DISTRICT.
[from our ows correspondent.] Januai/17. Allusion has been made at various times to the workings some considerable distance abovo the Liverpool Store, on tho bed of the New River. Ifc now seerrs that the men were pi'ncipa M y engaged ' i m>rk ; ng the flats, and are making average wages. Tho population about here is estimaed at ICO men, who are chiefly from Gerntan Gully and neighborhood. At Wood and Paterson's Creeks the New River Gold Mining and the Morning Star Companies are doing very well, as also one or two other claims which are paying exceedingly well. Lancashire Gully and Italian's continue to be as prosperous as ever, and in no part of the district are parties doing better. The New River Water Race Company are making great progress with their long tunnel, and it is said that a few weeks more will see the termination of the greatest work that has ever been undei taken in the New River district. When this is completed it will enable the water to flow from the right to the left hand branch of the New River, and soon after the water will be available for use. There is very little further information known respecting the rush that took place last week, excepting that the ground lies between the right and left hand branches of the Cockabulla, about half a nr'e above the store. It is about hero that the run of gold from the Eight-M''e is supposed to be, but whether the ground lately opened has any connection -with, it time alone will tell. For many years past the necessity of a bridge over the New River, at the june tion of the Cockabulla, has been sorely felt. Fatal accidents have occurred for the wftut of one, and the Press has continually urged on the Government the necessity of one being placed over it. The Road Board formerly erected a temporary one, which lasted till a fresh came down, when it disappeared. Mr Jackson placed another over, which met with a similar fate, and p'-sengers were compelled to avail themselves of the use of a canoe to tf row them o'er the ferry," but tho hazardous nature of this mode of crossing the river at the time of a flood so nearly came to a disagreeable if not a fatal termination at Christmas that Mr Gr en, the sue jssor of Mr Jackson, determined to erect a fresh bridge oy«r the New River, as well aa one over the Cockabulla Creek. Tenders have been accepted for the bridge, which is to be several feet above hi^h-water mark. It is to be sft wide, and strong enough for horses to cross. Too much praise cannot be given to the enterprising speculator, and- the Government ought to encQvago him in the undertaking. Every preparation is being made by the successful tenderers for the making of the Marsden and Greenstone road. Men are now being engaged, and the work is to be commenced without delay.
