PAROA ROAD BOARD.
| TO THE EDITOR.] Sir — Your leading article this morning, j Saturday, has opened up a new and complex state of affairs as regards the Parba Road Board, and which it is to be hoped the present members will at once grapple with. It is a well-known fact the Board owes several hundred pounds, and that there is a heavy interest upon that sum which will have to be paid sooner or later. The County Council has nothing now to do with granting subsidies to the Road Boards, and the General Government, : according to the circular from the Colonial j Secretary's Office, quoted in this morning's | issue, says — "The whole of the grant is to be expended exclusively on the formation of new roads, bridges, and culverts, and in the maintenance thereof for one year after completion, and in the completion of such works, commenced last year, as are not yet finished, &c, &c." The General Government, therefore, will advance money for new works only, and take it out of the power of any Board to allocate any portion of the General Government money to pay off any liability the Road Board may owe for works performed previously. Comment is unnecessary; the Board owes money which must be paid, and the longer it is delayed the greater it will become. I am, &c, N.R. Marsden, January 13, 1872.
