RUTHERGLEN.
[from ode own corbespondent.] This district has proved quite as prosperous during tlie past year as it has done : f or -the" three -previous Jones. 7 Although the population' has "not increased materially, yet the "favorable ..weather during the last nine months for siuicihg" has -enabled the miners to continue an uninterrupted course 'of wbrk; sluicing being the order of the day ; cradling being obsolete. Business has proved prosperous during the year, and although the tramway has .beeii taken up to the place where it used to Join the Paroa and Marsden line, there is yet a passably. track. for passenger and horses. 'It •'■has ; bee,n" aiVftpuaced that the New. Year initiates a fr.esii' era in business, tfce twb princip fl stores being closed on. Sundays, so that .parties- requiring provisions will have to procure them on Saturdays. There has been no new ground " opened of . any 'consequence, although • at one time it was expected the Deep Lead, at. the rear of Paroa, would have realised expectations that were entertained by some. Several claims were taken up, and' were ultimat'ely'aba^doned. One or two parties Ttyowever still remain. Several parties are working on the 'Welshman's tract. -i'The groutid can hardly be called new, as they 'were working there four years since, but the present parties have found gold in deeper g-ioand which requires tunnelling. They are now in full working order, after spending; a ;goocl -deal of labor and capital in doing.so. ; It is expected that they will have a long spell of work, 1 and' it is to |>c hoped that it will , continue to prove as payabloas.it does at present, At Welshman's the population continues as usual, and is likely to do so for many years. The \ ground j is sballow^and some good patches have been found at various times. On the ; Victoria or Deep Lead there are only two or three parties at work. This ground will/ most likely .continue as it is at present, virtually deserted,- till the New River race :'s completed to it, when it will once again hold a good population. At Rutherglen, Hart and Oo are said'to have had a yeiy.good washing up previous to Christmas.: .Tliey are sluicing near the old . track • leadirig from Rutherglen to Welshman?. Near to them Davis and Co have also "been: sluicing, and have done very .well.: 1 -Collins and ..Co are working, .at, the same place with their usual results. "The Cornish partyare working at German Gully j they still retain the character of doing well. The same maybe said of Dalzelle and Co., Hughes and Co.', the German Co,, near the Saltwater, ifec. Ryan and Co. have been taking water on to a very high ter-; race at the top of the Infant's Creek. They have been some time engaged in this work, but as it is known that there is : a great depth of wiish with gold all* tlu'ough it, the undertaking is, looked on as one of the best specks out. At one time it was thought impossible for any-; one to bring water on to it, and highi estimates were indulged in if it couldi only be done. 'Ryan and Co. have proved that:,water can be brought, on, and .w"lj soon be in a position to show how it will: pay. The New River Water-race will! command this ground, so the sooner it is! . in, jthe. better it will be for all parties* '-
