THE SUICIDE OF WALTER MONTGOMERY.

Our last news of the late Walter Montgomery was that he had attempted to revive the poetical drama at the Gaiety Theatre in London.' That the attempt was a pecuniary failure must surprise nobody, .nor was Mr Montgomery a man likely to be much affected by it. The season was brought to an abrupt close at the end of its third week, " because of the intense heat of the weather," and a perfectly understandable cause it was. The failure was met by the deceased with, a gallant and manlike front, and he, at ,. any rate, had the consolation of having .l. done the best for the art he loved bo well. On the night when he announced the close of the season he was as gay as though the affair had been a perfect success, and he retired from the Gaiety apparently determined to make the best, of a bad job and " try again." On the 30fch of August he was married to an American lady, Mjaa Laleah Burpee Bigejow, to, whose Pauline he had a few days bafore played Claude, A run up the, river for a couple of days was all the wedding tour he allowed hinv* self, for he had arranged to sail from Liverpool to America on the 7th instant positively. He returned to town on the evening of the Ist of September, and proceeded to bis residence at 2 Stafford street Old Bond street. Shortly after his arrival, at about 11 o'clock at night, the

report of firearms was heard in his apartment, aud it was found that the unfortunate man Had shot himself with a small pistol, which he appears to have placed in his mouth. Medical assistance was immediately procured, but life was extinct.
