Melbourne.— Tho Argus of the 30th Sep tember reports :—
In the import markets, trade to-day has not shown any particular signs of activity. One or two exceptional sales have come under our notice, which have helped to keep the market alive. Breadstuffs are still exceedingly heavy. Quotations for flour are maintained at Ll3 5s to Ll3 15s, but in the absence of sales, may be considered only as nominal. Of wheat, we hear of the. disposal of a thousand bags prime Adelaide, in a line, at 6s, terms. There is nothing doing in oats ; -we understand, however, that offers have been made for parcels, which may eventually lead to'business, but have not yet been responded to.. Prime maize is firm at 3s 9d ; sales are not large, the business done being somewhat of a retail character. Prime samples of barley are wanted for malting, and parcels can be quitted at extreme rates. We near -of a shipment of close on 500 bags having changed hands at 4s 3d. Dundee goods are still in favor ; we are informed of TOO bales woolpacks having been taken up at 4s Id to 4s lid. Owing to a considerable advance in the home markets, and a further rise expected, attention ha? been directed towards Scotch pig iron, and upwards of 450 tons have been cleared off at very full rates, and the parcel is now held for a good advance. Coarse salt has met with more notice. A shipment of 200 tons has, we learn, been taken up on terms withheld. The balance of the Frances Milly's cargo of Penang produce was offered for gale this forenoon, consisting of 1004 baskets refining sugar, and the whole found purchasers at prices ranging from Ll2 to Ll3 15s per ton net cash, in bond. We regret to notice the suspension of Messrs X>*eph Taylor and Co., merchants, of this city. The liabilities are supposed to amount to L 16.000, but a considerable portion is due to English creditors.
