[per greville's telegraph company, reuter's agents.] Invercargill, Oct. 3. A meeting was held last night on the Chinese question, when the following motion was carried : — " That the position of the Colony in reference Public Works and Immigration Scheme demands the discouragement of Chinese immigration and the encouragement of European immigration. Wellington, Oct. 3. Matthew Block, 'alias Jules Simon, mentioned lately in the Melbourne telegraphic news as having been a fraudulent insolvent, in Hobart Town, and was supposed to have bolted to New Zealaud, has been brought up, and remanded. Port Chalmers, Oct. 3. Arrived— The Guiding Star, with 190 Chinese on board. She has been out 1 14 days. During the passage, 27 of the passengers died, and there are 20 otherß sick. The vessel has been placed in quarantine.
