, [GYMti^ xnew, AuausT 26.J We have been supplied by Messrs Cole- ' man and Co. of. 2*o/ 1 north, California reef, with a report by Mr W^Birkmyre, the assayer pf the Bank of Victoria, MeU bourne, of a yield of a parcel qf pyritea obtained "from the refuse of a crushing of quart* from the reef.. The report ia as follows : T -M Bank of Victoria, Melbourne, Augusts, 1871., Dr ßurke. — Dear Sir— The following is^ the assay report and value of the iron pyrites from Queens* land :— 2QoogKof;the pyrites contain 30.7gr silvery gold ; r the, pure go|^|^reighing 19.9gr, and the pure silver 10.8^. fore a ton of these pyrites contains the enormous quantiiyj^Qold,? saßp« Odwt 16gr ; value in the home market, Ll3Bl, Silver, 176o*Wwt Ogr.; valutria the home market, .148. Total, 601o« Bdwt 16gr ; valuej yl*X42&. , The pyrites also contain 4J3 1 per' cent, sulphur ; one ton containing 9^cwt sulphur, worth fully 20s, the total value being 1A430? less f the cost of extraction, which should not exceed L 4 per too» I am, &c, W. BquKmnfes^" It will , be remembered that Mr Josepb^Lthe local assayer, handed to the shareholders of' Nb.l north, California? »^ bat' of gold weighing 6oz Bdwt *3g* ? tfee yield of 2370z of pyrites. Surelytliflse results show . the' "necessity of dose attention being paid to the subject of perfecting our gold exti^ting^machifTety ? BuTwe mast be cweful not tprlet public that we consider the foregoing yields from refuse staff to befaftrqe cri» teri«n of the probable.averterf yield. The Califdrhia' reef is a neffone, and the refuse of its.crushings is likely to be proportionably auriferous. The relative value of pyrites obtained from Tarioas reefs on this field was ascertained by Mr Laurie, of: the Queensland Qnartz Crush ing Company, some time since. It appears that)* great deal of vlhe pyritesxdid not contain a reuiunerative gnajrjtw of the precious metal ; but the general result of the experiment* evidently was to impress the Directors of the Company with the necessity of meiniTror'b«atiiur pyrites. > In connection with the above, we nay mention f wha.t m^ny of our leaders may bien iDMde for some time in Victoria to effect the saving of psntesat the snaohines.
