Samuel Craven was charged with ateaV ing LI from Robert Kettle on 6th September at Ahaura. The prosecutor said he was in. company withthe prisoner at Ahaura 7 on ? %e day mentioned, and he fell asleep while prisoner was in the room. Hehad £14 when he fell asleep, but when he awoke it was gone. He identified the Id-note produced as his'propertyv It was in his purse when his money was stolen. J. Xiochead said the prosecutor gave him L 24 to keep for him on the Ith September, and he gave him back Ll4 on the 6thT He ran up a score of LlO in the meantime, and it was deducted. Sergeant Goodall said the prosecutor was given in charge for disorderly conduct on the night of the 3rd, and on searching him at the watch-house, L 25 were taken from him. He recovered. L 24 when he was let out next morning, LI being retained for bail for his ajjpearapce at Court. The witness *safd ' he particularly noticed the note produced among Kettle's money when it was returned to him.' It was torn in one corner, and it had a peculiar signature. John Hamilton (Gilmer) proved that the. prisoner changed the LI. note produced at -the 'bar of his hotel on Wednesday evening. He gave the note to the Police. ■ For the defence,' Duntail Walnesley said he gave the prisoner a LI note and 5s the day before the robbery. Mr Staite addressed the Court for the prisoner, who was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment with hard labor. The Court adjourned to September 21.
