tThe correspondent- of the Dunstan Time says:— "The largest nugget of gold as yet discovered in the Province of Otago was brought to., light on Saturday last by James M'Donald and party in their claim about four miles above the township. The ground has only lately been taken up, and .the party in constructing theit tail-race, and just where they first struck the bottom, turned up this fine lump of gold, together with a smaller piece weighing about five penny-, weights. The discovery has created quite an excitement, and a rush on a small scale has set in to the locality.. The ground for years past has been looked ,unon as being good, and the eagerness with which adjoining claims were.taken up, and^ the spirited way work was commenced, quite refreshed one, and vividly brought to mind the activity of former years. All were expectant, and on a future occasion I hope to chronicle that the expectations of the most sanguine have been more than lealised." ; The German Government have ordered two more powerful ironclads. The attendance at the London Exhibition is now only eight (thousand or nine thousand daily. The Duke of Edinburgh has been on a visit to Germany. .. . ■ Mr Grote, the historian of . Greece, was buried in Westminster Abbey. The "Passion Play has again been performed at Oberammergan, Bavaria.
