THE ARNOLD FERRY.
[to the bditoe.] Sib— ln your issue of the 11th ult., I observed » paragraphi?elative»to^e«uchvexed question, of the, ferries across the boundary between Nelson and Westland. As the matter is finally settled, I was content," but finding that the vpublic-^w«mis-led or in ignorance as to the merits of the matter, I beg to apologise for intruding on your space for the enclosed, which will be my last on the subject; Yon stated that the Nelson Government had given a right to one person, and Westland to another, thereby neither had a right from both. I beg to state, that on my returnf from Hokitika (after the arbitration held there), to Greymouth, there was discovered, after previous searching, in the office in Cobden, a copy of the original grant of the Arnold ferry, the refusal of the renewal of which, has been the cause of all the dispute. The Nelson Government (the promise of the Superintendent given to me notwithstanding), has always refused to renew ifr, f sayiDg there was no such right granted 1 ; but at the time above referred to, it was found, the purport of which ran £htis :— Granted to Alex. Montgomery, by Mr. Warden Blackett the first Nelson, Warden in the Grey district), the sole right to establish a self-acting punt on the Arnold Itiver. Applied for in November, 186&, and granted in December, 1865, . :•■-.- • I am, &c., • -7 . _ ,_ „ GekshojlPjl^tis: Arnold Junction, August 28.
