To give an idea Jof the severity of the weather in the Skipper's district, Otago,. we (Arrow Advocate) may mention that Capt; Macdonald, of the Ophir Reef, informs us that there are at present eight feet of ice in his dam, The sluicing of the landslip that . hasjteovered up the .reef had to be postponed, owing to the race-water freezing whilst fall-v ' ing down the mountain. -Though the -fall is nearly perpennicular, the water froz.e ;sp rapidly that the ice would soon have formed quite a large glacier, had, not the operations been suspended. . The. mercantile navy of Canada is now *lhe' fourth largest in the world, being exceeded only by those of Great Britain, the United States, and France. Every unmarried lady of 40 has passed the Cape of Good Hope.
