The Otago Daily Times, of the Ist instp contains the. following telegraphic intelligence anent the iftjis ':— v Messrs M'lntosh and Spiers, planters, were inveigled ashore at the Ba River, and killed by the same tribe that murdered Mr Baker. 300 whites have volunteered to join Thakombau in punishing the murderers. The Levonis have submitted to Thakombau, and the whole tribe, to the number of nearly 1000, have been distributed among the planters for five years' labor. A European named Walter Golding, and a Tanna native, were murdered by some Apia laborers on board the ketch Edith, near Levuka. The Apia men took the boat, and escaped to the hills, but have since been captured. The new Government are working* vigorously, and a strong Opposition has also been organised. In : the Supreme Court, two white judges and one native judge sentenced 14 Lovoni chiefs to hard labor for life for high treason ; and for causing the death of two Fiji men they were found guilty of manslaughter, and again sentenced to imprisonment with hard labor for life. On the petition of 320 of the white residents at Levuka, a convention has been called to re-arrange the constitution.
