> (FROM OUR OWN CORBESPO^iNT;}** :■. „.• ■..•.■/:.:■:■ z r :.-:■- .-■...■■ JJO29, - The Ward elections for the City Council . are now on. The nominations were made on Thursday at the usual place, and were read out by the Town. Clerk* : The seats for the whole four Wards are to be contested. For South. Ward, Mr Cargill, who seeks re-election, is opposed by :orie Lloyd, a fish hawker, on the ground that he was fined for hawking without a license. For High Ward, Mr Walter,! who has represented the Ward for ? the last two years, is opposed by Mr Keith Ramsay, for what reason does not very well appear, unless because Walter is a publican. ' For Bell Ward, there is a great contest, Mr Thoneman, the retiring member, standing for Leith Ward, where he resides, pconsequen tly no fewer than five citizens 1 ha^e come forward to fight the battle— Messra Cutten, Gilohrist, Neale, and Patersbn ; Mr Evans retires in favor o£ the lattefc named gentleman.; For Leith Ward, Mr Hill- Jack retires, and does not seek to be elected again. Mr Thoneman came forward, and was expected be returned unopposed ; but just at the latest moment a Mr Findjater was nominated, so a contest ensues. For Auditors, there are three nominated— Messrs Bayliss, Douglas, and James. The various candidates are making . things a little, lively by holding meetings and spouting away about; their qualifications for the honor. The poll takes' placl on Tuesday.' l • l- ■. Since I last wrote you one of our oldest and most respected citizens has passed; : from amongst us, Mr John Gillies; who: has, for many years back, filled various positions of public trust, died oa Saturday last, 22nd instant. He had been in his usual health till about a week before, when he took his bed and , rapidly sank; In him the cause of national educafioft has lost one of its most powerful and consistent advocates. His funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, and was attended by a great gathering, nearly every one of any mark in the town and neighborhood ibeing present, and every mark of respect waspaidtohxs'memoryt ; r( ' ■ , A queer little hitch has occurred in coti-' nection with the late election of Mayor. It turns but that one of the polling places was not situated in the particular Ward" for which the potes were supposed to be taken, and in the opinion of the' City there is sufficient to invalidate the election. The polling place for High Ward was the CHy Council Chamber, in High street, but it seems the line on the map dividing the Ward goes Tip themiddle of that street, and.the Council rooms I are consequently in South Ward. A special meeting of the Council has been called M consider the matter. It is thought there will have to be another election.' ■'■■'-'-'•'- By the ship Jean Sands, which arrived from Hong Kong on Tuesday, we have received another large importation of "that heathen Chinee." . No fewer than 315 of these peculiar people were brought by this vessel, and they were decidedly an ugly| lot, far inferior to the last batch. Tib * diggers up-country are getting riled about the Chinese and their ways, . arid the in- 4 - telligence by the Jean Sands will go far to aggravate this feeling, for when she left there were some .other vessels laid on for this port with emigrants. The, Jean Sandslot nearly all left for the country y ester! < day. , :,,;..,,; :, ; . , -. ■ ,;.-,; ,• >.; U'" * The Roman Catholics held a meeting., on Thursday evening, under the presi- v dency of their Bishop, in reference. to the ..-, Education question. . The Bishop made a long speech in defence of his conduct in the matter, plainly threw i down ; /the. • gauntlet, and intimated thatjhe would riot?; ' accept the system of education as ' ffiipffiar^b~ in force here. A petition-to the Assembly, praying for State" aid to their schools, was read at this meeting, and numerously i. signed. This persistency on the part of the Roman Catholics is, far more likelyi to A defeat their object, for a spirit of opposition is being raised to their claims, and is widely spreading. An asjoctetioii, Having k * for its object the maintaining of the secnlar as against the denominational system of education, is being formed in Dunedin, - with some good men at its head: ; ' , : Whether it is the changeable weither or ; . i ot, I cannot say, but we have had two or three sudden deaths, a suicide, , and; an attempted' suicide, all within two or three <^ysv ''■'. The case Holmes y. the Superintendenjt-. abd Executive, regarding the road across f t le north of Anderson's Bay,, was again bfefore the Resident Magistrate's Court this week, but haa been, postponed, tiUn 1 uesday next, on accbijnt of the illness of o le of the Magistrates. ''' ~ The United States steamer. Nebraska cime Jato port the ' other day , ;with. the European and American mails. TheHar*

bor Company are to run their steamers to the big ship Reduced fares, to, enable the curious to inspect the stranger. 5 The port is very bare of vessels at present. The Roslyn Castle has cleared for London with a cargo composed chiefly of preserved Imeats. The weather was rather stormy at the beginning of the week, as well as rather cold ; but it has become mild again, with a few showers of rain. '.
