QUEENSLAND.
The principal event worth recording in connection with Ravenswood, is the discovery of payable surfacing on some of the reef claims! This surfacing, which is about 6in deep, is composed of quartz, clinkers, earth, &c, and is all passed under the stampers. At first the returns were excellent, and there was quite rush at this description of mining ; the returns have not all turned ont remunerative, and in some instances have not paid the crushing ; this unsatisfactory result has caused miners engaged in collecting surfacing to be more cautious in their operations, and to prospect their stuff before sending it to the machine. A good deal of this surfacing turned out an ounce to the ton, which was a highly remunerative result, and its discovery was a godsend to the machines, as otherwise some of them would most likely have been idle. There is plenty of machinery on Ravenswood, more fiian will find work for any lengthened period, unless fresh discoveries are made. The price of crushing has been reduced, and a further reduction is more than probable,' as the large heaps of quartz which had been accumulating for some eighteen months or two years, before the arrival of machinery, are being rapidly reduced in sise and number.
