ROSS.
[boss news, juiy 3.] We were very pleased to find that the trial of the new wheel on the Old Whim Claim, which took place on Saturday last, afforded much satisfaction to those interested in its action. Having been favored with a view of the plan of this fine piece of work, we obtained the following correct statement of the dimensions of its several parts : —Length of the upper tank legs, 42ft; upright legs of wheel-frame, 28ft 6in ; four cross beams, 30ft long, lOin by 12in thick. The wheel is 25ft diameter, with a 4ft breast; drum, Bft diameter, with 3ft 3in breast. The spindle is 14in square, with an iron axle 16ft long and 3in square, secured by four iron glands. The buckets, 69 in number, each side, are 14in deep with 4in bottoms. The tank above the wheel is Bft 6in long, sft wide, and 2ft 6in deep; and the tank below the wheel, for supplying the boxes, 14ft long, 9ft wide, and 12in deep. This tank supplies water to two self-feeders, by which means both the company's shafts will be worked at the same time, the wheel being a revorsable one. The break, which' is the work of Mr D, Williams, also deserves special notice, as it possesses the power of stopping the wheel, when full pressure is on it, before the bucket rises 3ft after the break is put on—a feat which no other wheel in this district can be depended on to perform—in fact, it is repeatedly the case, with many breaks, that the buckets will rise 20 or 30 feet before a stoppage can be obtained. The breakhandle is placed on the poppet-head plat-
form, between the two shafts, which, with the double action it possesses, enables the break-man to stop the wq^el while attending both sides of the shaft. The break* rod is about 45ft long. Each break-strap is 35ft in length, and they command % break surface on the wheel of 24ft. The whole woodwork of this substantial structure reflects great credit on the contractor, Mr Robert Schofield, and has, we understand, given entire satisfaction to the shareholders.
