From Brighton, we learn that the party who have been sinking to recover the lost lead, have bottomed on the reef, aud the venture has proved a failure. Reporting upon the survey of the Ross and Hokitika road, the Boss News of Friday, says :— " Mr Montgomerie and his three assistants arrived here last evening, having cleared aud levelled Mr O'Connor's surveyline of the Hokitika road through to within a short distance of the Totara. ; They have kept close to their work, having averaged, a mile a day, and would not have come in till its completion if the 'tucker ' had held out. The road is chiefly on terrace-ground, and none of it is swamp. It passes through an apparently aur, iferpii s country, which has not been much prospected." .-
