Melbourne, June 26. It is stated that Stevenson and Sons, soft goodsmen, propose to test the legality of the collection of duties under the new tariff resolutions by an action in the Supreme Court. Dixon, who was apprehended on board the Gothenburg, at the Heads, for wife desertion, has instituted libel actions against the Melbourne Herald and Ballarat Courier. Allen, a spectator at a pigeon shooting match at Sandhurst, was accidentally shot. M'Grath, a working-man, was run over by a train. A new gold field has been discovered near Kilmore, and an auriferous quartz reef at Mornington. Sarah Savage was killed by alcoholic poisoning in Melbourne en route for New Zealand. A lengthened enquiry has taken place into the loss of the s.s. Auckland. Capt. Walker attributed the loss of the snip to the heavy inset after an easterly gale. The general evidence supported that view of the case. The Navigation Board censured primarily the company, and secondly Capt. Walker. The uncertainty as to the fiscal policy of the administration paralyses business. It is believed there will be extensive imposts, as they are determined to raise revenue by Customs and Excise duties. Sydney, June 25. Two Chinese mail robbers were taken at Araluen. Payne, chief mate of the Winifred, has been stabbed by a refractory seaman. The Zavistowski sisters are popular and attractive. Hely, proprietor of the floating dock, died suddenly. The Basilisk sails for Auckland on the 14th July. The City of Adelaide leaves on the IstJuly for San Francisco, via Fiji. The Nevada will return to California from Dunedin. Adelaide, June 25. Gale, the reronaut, made a successful ascent, after some previous failures. The agreement with the British Telegraph Company has been signed and forwarded to England. The charge against Tidemann has been withdrawn.}
