Melbourjik. — From the latest dates supplied by the Kate Conley, which arrived last niglit, we have detailed news to the lSbh May. The Argus of that date reports :— In the import markets business is be- i ginning to wear quite a different aspect, now that the excitement of the last day or two is over, but has not yet settled down sufficiently to admit of transactions being freely reported. Breadstuff's is moving off slowly at very full prices. Sales of flour, in moderate lots, are mentioned at Ll6 10s to Ll7, ! but only for trade purposes. Wheat is again ' a shade firmer. Port MacDonnell is offering at 7s 4d. For Adftlaide, 7s 6d to 7s Sd is required, and at the latter figure a parcel changed bands on terms. Victorian wheat was disposed of by auction at 7s 4d to 7s sd. A good deal of feeling lias been shown in commartial eweies m eo»9er)Y>e»cß o5 the intended changes in the tariff, and amongst the deputations which waited upon Mr Francis for the purpose of laying their grievances before him was one from the millers, who endeavored to impress upon him the injustice of putting a duty of only LI 5s on flour, or the manufactured article, while imposing a tax of LI 7s 9d on wheat, or the raw material; but failed to obtain so favorable a reply as they could wish. Oats are very quiet ; one or two small sales are reported at 3s 6d. to 3s 7id of good milling qualities. Maize is quoted at 4s 4d to 4s 6d ; but there is no business to report. The suspense in regard to tLe new duties being over, attention has been directed once more towards teas, which : has resulted in the quittance of the entire cargo of the Carl Ludwig, the most recent arrival from Foo-Chow, and the last in this port for the season, the Lady Belmore, from Hong Kong, having been declared for Sydney. A considerable portion of this purchase has again been re-sold. We also understand that several parcels of a similar class of tea are under negotiation, if they have not already been closed for. The large export trade \ which has been going on for some time back has drawn to a considerable extent on stocks ■ of congous, at Is 2d to Is 3d per lb, but these qualities are now scarce, and will of course remain so till September. An unexpected demand for cornsacks Iris led to the disposal of 100 bales, on private terms. Operations in sugar to a large extent are reported. We hear of a considerable parcel of five Avbite Java crystals, in mats, having changed hands at £39 10s ; 14,000 or 15,000 bags Mauritius have also been quitted at £38 10s for middliug white. The Carl, which has arrived from Mauritius this afternoon, brings dates to 25th March, but her advices have been anticipated by those to hand per Sarah via Adelaide. In liquids we note the sale of fifty quarter-casks Hennessy's pale brandy at 7s.
