The 8.8. Kennedy is expected to arrive early this morning from Nelson and Westport, and is announced to sail for Hokitika this afternoon. The brig Magnet, Captain Clinskill, was towed to sea yesterday afternoon by the ps. Dispatch, bound for Melbourne. She had a considerable cargo of coal, hides, skins, &c, and her passenger accommodation was fully taken up. The p. 8. Charles Edward left the wharf yesterday afternoon for Westport and Nelson. The s.s. Wallabi, Captain Daniel, sailed yesterday afternoon for Wanganui direct,, •with a full cargo of coal. The schooners Canterbury, from Lyttelton, and Caledonia, from Dunedin, are on the coast, and may show up in the roadstead at any minute. A considerable export of timber continues to be made from Hokitika to Canterbury ports. The Spray and Isabella have both left within the past two days with full cargoes for Lytteltou. The s.s. Waipara left on her trip to Southern ports of the Coast on Wednesday. She proceeds as far as Martin's Bay, for. which place she had a quantity of cargo and several passengers. A great improvement has been effected in the Kaiapoi river, by means of the recent heavy fresh, andLthe channel has been scoured out deeper than it has been for some years. There iB also a good channel at the b >r, but it is rather inconvenient for vessels to steer a proper course at present, on account of the flood having washed away all the stakes and beacons. This, however, will be promptly attended to by the pilot, as soon as the tides will admit of the channel being re-staked. The old adage that "out of evil springeth good" has been fully exemplified in this instance, and, though some of the landsmen have experienced inconvenience from having their land inundated, the occurrence has greatly improved the river trade. Prior to last week, the stores in Kaiapoi were full of grain, and the shipping trade was greatly cramped through the temporary freak the river had taken, by not allowing an eas^ means of transit for the exportation of produce ; but the only requirement now existing ] is vessels to load grain, and it will take a great number to clear out present stocks. — Lyttelton Times.
