STAMP DUTIES. The following is a summary of the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act : — There are four Schedules to the Act. The first contains the duties on deeds and other instruments relating to transactions between living persons; the second, the duties on probates of wills and letters of administration j the third^ the duties on legacies and successions to personal estate under any testamentary disposition, or upon intestacy ; the fourth, duties on successions to real and personal estate. Schedule I. Agreements, or, minute, or memorandum of agreement, under hand only where the matter shall be of the value of L2O or upwards — Is. Bills of exchange (inland), for every LSO, or fractional part of L 50 — Is. Bills of exchange drawn out of the Colony, but endorsed or negotiated within the Colony, the same duty as on an inland bill of Hhe same amount and tenor. Foreign bills, if drawn singly or otherwise than in a set of two or more, the same duty as on an inland bill. If drawn in sets of two, 6d for every LSO, or fractional part of LSO. Promissory notes (other than payable on demand) not exceeding L 25 — 6d; exceeding L 25, and not exceeding LSU — Is ; and so on, Is for every LSO, and fractional part of LSO. Promissorynotes (payable on demand) issued by any bank in New Zealand are exempt from these duties, banks being otherwise chargeable. Bills of lading, or receipt in lieu thereof, from the master, mate, or agent of any vessel, for goods carried beyond the Colony — Is. Conveyances of" any kind, except transfer expressly pi'ovided for by the Act, for every LSO, or fractional part of LSO, of the purchase money — ss. Crown grants and certificates of title granted under the hand of the RegistrarGeneral, pursuant to "The Land Registry Act, I860," ai*e exempt from these duties. Deeds, or instruments of any kind whatever, not otherwise charged in this chedule — 10s. Exemptions from the preceding duties : All instruments relating to the services of apprentices, clerks or servants ; all bonds of mortgages, whether affecting real or personal estate, bills of sale by way of mortgage, aud all transfers, agreements, re-leases, re-conveyances, and discharges thereof; all preferable liens under " The Wool and Oil Securities Act, 1858 ;" all customs bonds ; all administration bonds ; all bonds on appointment of special bailiffs. Drafts or cheques payable on demand, or otherwise — Id. Lease, or agreement for a lease, for ' every LSO, or fractional part of LSO, for the yearly rent — 2s Gd, Lease of waste lands under the provisions of any Waste Lands Act or Gold Fields Act are exempt from these duties. Policy of insurance of ships or cargo for any period not exceeding three months — 2s 6d ; all other marine policies, for every LIOO, or fractional part of LlOO— ls. Promissory notes, payable to the bearer on demand, issued by any Bank or Banking Company, at the rate of L 2 for every LIOO of the average anuuai amount in circulation, as certified under "The Bankers Returns Act, 1858." Receipts for any sum of L 5 or upwards — Id. Exemptions. — Receipts for money paid to or for her Majesty; receipts endorsed on any duly stamped instrument acknowledging the receipt of the consideration money therein expressed ; acknowledgment given for any money deposited in any Bank; receipts for any money paid into land, building, and provident societies. Transfers, except by way of mortgage, of any run or station held under lease from the Crown, or ot any iuteresfc therein, for every LIOO, or fractional part of LIOO, of value assessed, as provided in the Act — 10s. Transfer of shares or stock of any corporation, company, or society in New Zealand, where the purchase money shall not exceed L 20 — Is ; exceeding L2O, and not exceeding L 50 — 2s Gd ; and so on, 2s 6d for every LSO, or fractional part of LSO. Schedule 11. Probate of a will and letters of administration with a will annexed, where the effects (as sworn to by the executor or administrator) are : — Under the value of LIOO— L2. Above the value of LIOO, and under L2OO— L2. Above the value of L2OO, and under L3OO— L3. Above the value of L3OO, and under L4OO— L4. Above the value of L4OO, aud under LSOO— LS. And above LSO0 — 1 per cent. Letters of administration without a will annexed, where the effects are sworn to by the administrator : — Under the value of LIOO— LI 10s. Above the value of LIOO, and under L2OO— L3. Above the value of L2OO, and under L3OO— L4 10s. Above the value of L3OO, and under L4OO— L6. Above the value of L4OO, and under LSOO— L7 10s. And above Lsoo— l£ per cent.
