THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 1871.

The long list of objections that have been made by tliß Registration Ofllcer for the Grey Valley District appears rather formidable, and will no doubt have astonished many who thought that they were properly registered on the Electoral Roll. But, making allowances for those undoubted cases of disqualification arising from death or departure from the district, a largo number of the objections can be rectified. Many of the names are objected to on the ground that the' persons have ceased to occupy the house or property for which they were originally registered. We on several occasions prior to the expiry of the appointed time for the registration of claims to vote warned the public that anyone who had changed his residence or otherwise altered his qualification would be required to register his new qualification, but we are sorry to observe that there has been great carelessness in this respect, cfmparatively few having taken the trouble to forward a fresh claim to the Registration Officer. The coutse that will now have to be pursued by thoss who although still holding a proper qualification to vote, neglected to record any change of residence at the last period of registration is to appear at the Revising Court, either personally or by counsel, when wo have no doubt that on a proper representation of their still being the holders of a bona fide qualification their names will be allowed to be put on the roll. The Revising Officer holds a Court of Revision in Greymouth on the 20th instant, and we would advise all of those whose nair.63 have been objected to on the mere technical ground that they have changed their qualification to attend. We trust that they will not allow themselves to be disfranchised through the same carelessness which caused them to neglect registering their new claims at the proper time. It must be understood,, however, that the Revising Officer can only deal with objections to existing registrations ; he has no power to place a fresh name on the roll.
