Wellington. May 4. We have had very stormy weather. The Virago's boat capsized with sixteen men, thirteen were picked up, but two warrant officers, stewards Smith and Taylor, and one of the boats crew, were drowned. The bodies have not been found. The Rangatira lef b for Napier at noon, with the Judge. The Virago was to leave this evening. Nelson, May 6. The case of Sir David Monro against Messrs Luckie and Collins, of the Colonist, was argued to-day, on the application of Mr Pitt, for Mr Connolly, on behalf of Sir David Monro, for the rule to be made absolute. Mr Fell opposed for the Colonist, and raised preliminary objections as to insufficient proof of publication. Fell cited numerous cases, and the Judge ruled on the case of Queen v. Baldwin that the rule must be discharged, but costs not to be allowed, as the point was technical. The libel arose on the assertion of the Colonist that Sir David Munro, in 1862, when Speaker, put back the clock of the House of Representatives" to carry a party measure. Mr Fox and Mr Luckie filed affidavits in reply, which traversed the affidavit of Sir David Monro, but they were not read in Court. Auckland, via Nelson, May 6. The James Patterson arrived from Fijis this morning. She reports several fatal cases of dysentry since the hurricanes, and a number of vessels and several lives were lost in the gales. The Thames mine is yielding wonderfully. Several new claims are turning out magnificent stone. The present quotations are — Caledonians, L 122 10s ; Thames Gold Mining Company, L22 10s j Cures, 20s ; Tookeys, Ll2; Moanatari, L 3; Prince Imperial, L 4; Otago, L 2. Alexandra, via Auckland, April 25. Tawhaio removed his head-quarters fromTokangamutu to Hautaura, WJiitiora's place, yesterday. All. the Waikatos will iv future live there. They are building houses and forming a large settlement.
