[per greville's telegraph company, reuter's agents.] TERRIBLE TRAGEDY AT DUNEDIN. MURDER AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

Dunedin, May 2. It is proposed to give a banquet to the officers of the Nevada, to celebrate the inauguration of the new Californian Service. A horrible tragedy occurred at Caversham this morning. A woman named M'Phee, the wife of a publican, had been ravished by one Kane, her husband's partner. This preyed on her mind, and this morning she cut her child's |throat with a butcher's knife, almost severing the head from the body ; she then attempted to commit suicide. She is not expected to recover. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of Kane. Blenheim, May 1. The ship Malay is reported to have taken fire at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. It is believed that the fire has been extinguished. No particulars are known.
