Mr John Johnston, proprietor of the Wak^va sawmills, was drowned while rafting timber. Mt Shepherd, schoolmaster, at Teviot, died sudden Jy of apoplexy. Flour firm at Ll2, wheat scarce at 4s 6d to 4s 9d, oats 2s 3d to 2s 6d. The market is well supplied. Thames via Tatjkanga, April 17. The following message was received overland, per private messenger, from Greville's agent : — The Caledonian Claim yielded for the fortnight 14,000 ounces, and a dividend of LI S was paid. The Thames Gold Mining Company's dividend for the fortnight was L 2. The Volunteers were inspected on Saturday by Col. Harrington. Bishop Croke purposes establishing anunnery at ihe Thames, and is now on a visit here. The Inverness Gold Mining Company lere has been taking out specimen scone all week, and shares have risen 7s in consequence. Tookey's are selling at L7 lss. The Golden Crown for the week has yielded 450 ounces. Other mines are turning out very payable quantities, and the dividend list is constantly increasing. A stone, weighing two and a-half cwt., was taken, out of the Caledonian claim Jast week valued at L4OOO. The overland Thames route is still closed to the mailman, and no effort has been made by Mr M'Lean to re-open it or even discuss the matter with the Natives. The opening of the district for gold mining is now looked forward to, and that will be the .most effectual way of settling the matter. Tauranga, April 21. Mr Brown, a settler here, has arrived overland. Te Hira is still obstinate, with the rest of his followers, at Ohinemuri, forbidding messengers, whether European or Native, passing through their territory. Mr Brown has been compelled to return from Ohinemnri. He crossed the mountain arriving at Kati Kati yesterday. A Je liter has been received from the Hau Haus threatening to obstruct the extension of the telegraph line hence to Kati Kati. The Tauranga Natives express indignation, because all the land through which the proposed line passed belongs to Government for a distance of 25 ni'.l.es.
