NEW RIVER DISTRICT,
[from our own correspondent.] April 18. The sluicing capabilities of the country bordering on the New River are so well known that every new race that is cut can only be looked on as a boon giving a permanency to the district, for nothing can be done without water. This very necessary fluid has always been short at No Name, barely enough to enable men to wash with, but totally inadequate to be of any material service in groundsluicing to any extent. To provide water to work the terraces round No Name and Cock-Eye, a party of six men. have been occupied for some months in cutting a large race from the Cock-Eye Creek. It is known as the Hibernian Race, and is cabable of holding some ten heads of water. It is intended to take it in the firat instance to No Name, which they expect to reach in about two miles from where they are at present. This race will be of very great value, as it is capable of being extended to the beach commanding Cameron'sTerrace, and also some very good ground, which it is calculated will pay very excellent wages. A good few men are still working at No Name, and are said to be making small wages and upwards. At Cariboo Creek, a tributary of CockEye, the claims are in ful) working order, remunerating the men for their labor. The same may be said of Mosquito and Cock -a - Bulk, though the population around here has somewhat diminished owing to the superior attractions of Holder's Terrace, near German Gully, and if the reports be true, several claims have already been found payable, but owing to the scarcity of water, and the work that has to be done in making paddocK and washing gear that the bullion market is not likely to be effected for the next month. It is said that some of the parties propose bringing water on to the terrace. Something of this kind will have to be done if possible, as there will be always a great difficulty to get sufficient water to wash with through the great height of the terrace. The Morning Star and the New River Gold Mining Co.s' claims are spoken of favorably. These large companies have their ground about a mile back from the Hungarian Lead, and is supposed not to have any connection with it. The Independent and the Germans' claims are in full working order. The Argus Company, no doubt, will be organised after a short time, and it is to be hoped the new proprietary will find the ground more lucrative than the former ones. At the Eight-mils some parties are doing very well, and one claim, which was thought done 18 months since, is still being worked, paying good wages, and is likely to do so for the next year. At Clifton a Warden's Court is supposed to be held fortnightly, but for the last five or six weeks the Court has been adjourned, owing to the non-attendance of the Warden. A great deal of dissatisfaction exists amongst the miners in consequence, some having attended several times and lost as much as three days each visit. This is a very serious loss to the men, and acts very injuriously to the interests of the district. It is a great pity the Government does not make some provision for the attendance of some other officer whenever the regular Warden, cannot be found. However, it is to be lipped for the future that the Court wiIJL be regularly held on the appointed day, as by so doing much trouble and inconvenience will be avoided by the miners generally.
