During the Handicap Hurdle .Race, Taylor, the rider of Gamester received a fall which necessitated his being assistedto the. steward's, booth, but after a ilttle ; rest he was enabled to walk home. The substitute for the Canterbury Knottingly will never have ah ; opportunity of starting for a race again, as he departed th.is life- on the Hokitiko course. The bell had been rung for the horses entered -foi? the Ladies' Purse to be saddled, and shortly afterwards he was led : out > and mounted.' .It was then seen 'that the horse had what: is commonly known- as the "staggers.'* The rider, however, gave the horse? a slapon the neck, and 'coaxed it. te proceed /as; far as the starting-post, and when. neaif that post it suddemy rolled oyer^ and there died* !, In^cqrisequence the.tacer was not proceeded with. :" \\ .V ' , I% " t< J , . Sir Tatton 1 carried 4Jb' overweight, and Supple Jack as much, as 191b v It is impossible to, quote the betting, as there appeared t6 he very little,-? but the odds were in favor of Sir Tattoii. A good start was. effected, and Gamester went to the, front, closely followed by Sir Tatton, Supple Jack bringing up the rear. When opposite the grand stand at the back of the course!; Sir Tatton went to the fore, Gamester a -couple of necks in the reari"and Supple Jack some' distance" behfad 1 . This order was maintained until the fourth time round, when Gamester struck the secqnd row of hurdles from the starting post and threw his jockey heavily. Supple Jaqk then came up. with a ru3h and challenged Sir Tatton, who put on a spurt, passed hjs jopponent,,apd came in a winner with tolerable ease. The next event was Selling Race, of 15 soys, one and a half ■miles.' ' : - '■.'■."■ ... The race then lay between the last two horses. Savoy Dick maintained; the lead which he had maintained at the start.
"After; passing^the Judge's post for the second itimej- Robin Hood sudden^ slewed off;; the course. In the meantime Saucy Didkj had gone round the course, and consequently won the prize. The ridinf 'id? ' young Morgan, Saucy Dick's jockey, was worthy of much praise, he evincing much judgment and coolness. When coming in for the last time, Peeress overhauled Gamester, and ; ran side by side with little XXX, and when within a., few strides of the winning-post, the chesnut answered to the , call of her jockey, and came in a winner by a neck. \ '..'.'. , Then followed a , Hurry Scurry. — Baddle and. bridle, .yalne . JAO, The. gift. of Mr Waltec .Ramsay. Open to all untrained horses that nave not won advertised public nion'ey ; eaten weights. One mile ; post entry, 1 soy. There were eight entries.for tjiis race — Little Oid, Kate, Black Bess', Dick, Tno, Bobby, Knottingly, and Shamrock. Kate, who had an excellent show of winning-the race, bolted, and Ino came in first; Bobby second.. . . • ; .... Consolation Handicap, of 15 soys, for beaten horses during the meeting. One mile.
