The Committee of gentlemen appointed at the recent public meeting for the purpose of arranging a suitable reception for his Excellency the Governor have so far decided that the demonstration shall be of an inexpensive character. Of course any detailed plan is impossible until the day of his Excellency's arrival is known, and the route he will take whether by land or water. T?he Committee have corner to the. decision of inviting the Governor to a Citizen's Ball and Supper, it being rightly considered that this would be, the best means for permitting the citizens generally, with the female members of their families, to share in the festivities. A Sub-Committee has been appointed to make all necessary enquiries as to the accommodation that can be furnished for his Excellency and suite, and the terms upon which the ball supper can be supplied. , Should his Excellency arrive by land there will probably be a procession of the various public bodies to meet and escort him to the town.* Should the Governor come by spa, other arrangements will have to be made. It is expected that by Tuesday next the Committee will have ascertained definitely his Excellency's intentions, and they will then make tinal ai* rangements. ' Although the Committee have decided upon expending as little mi'ney as possible: in outward signs of welcome, we are sure that the citizens will cordially unite in securing a thoroughly hearty reception to her Majesty's representative. The Nelson Government will provide for the Governor's convenience jn visiting the coal mine, which will be illur minated' on the occasion. W,e have no doubt that however unostentatious his Excellency's reception it will be sufficiently gratifying to him. In a few days we shall be able to give further particulars. . |
