Eight thousand bags of Mauritius sugars were sold by auction yesterday, but at a reduction of forty shilUpg3 all round. The Russian corvette Haydomach has arrived, she remains eight days, and. then proceeds to New Zealand. The Mayor's attmpt to form a committee to collect subscriptions towards the War Relief Fund, has failed. Macklin, brewer, has been committed for trial for forgery. Andrew Love, ex M.P., has been sentenced to six month| for larceny, as a bailee. Men are being] sworn in as a Naval Reserve. Arrived : Waterman, from Greymouth; Swordfish, from Dunedin; Australind, from Lyttelton. Sailed : Here, s.s, for Auckland; Lady Denison, for Wellington. At a meeting of J. L. Burkes creditors the liabilities were stated to be fifty-five thousand pounds. The nominal assets were sixty thousand, of which twentytwo thousand are due by the New Zealand firm. It is expected the unsecured creditors will get 5s 5d in the £. William Duthie, produce merchant, has stopped payment. His liabilities are eleven thousand pounds. Flour is selling at Lls to Lls 10s ; wheat is scarce, and wanted at 6s 3d to 6s 9d for best Adelaide. The Claud Hamilton sailed on the 23rd for New Zealand, but returned next morning, one boiler having burst. Sydney, March 29.. Practise at the batteries commenced on Saturday, and was successful. The brig Dayspring foundered at sea. The crew were saved by. the s.s. Wonga Wonga. The Asgembly has placed flour and wheat in the free list, and declined to increase the ad valorem duties. The Customs are now collecting the new duties. It is generally considered the act will pass without further amendment. A memorial has been presented to the Government in favor of subsidising the Californian mail. Sugars firm, sales at last quotations. Flour firm at Lls. Wheat scarce. Maize 3s 7d to 4s. Wool — Prices fully main, tamed, except for best fleece. A vessel from Torres Straits brings three thousand pounds worth of pearl shells. Adelaide, March 29. The Port Darwin telegraph is progresing favorably. Parliament is prorogued to the 30th June. Wheat has advancedjto 5s 9d, at which sales were made. Country flour Ll3.
