ROSS.

[from our own correspondent.]

April 3. A person named Andrew Harrison, native of North Mevine, Hulswich, Shetland, met with a very severe accident on the Ist inst., while out shooting. It appears that while in the act of ascending a tree, using his gun as a support, the charge exploded, entering his side just under the right arm-pit, traversing to, and lodging under, the shoulder blade. He was carried on a litter a distance of three or four miles from the scene of the occurrence to the TotaraDietrict Hospital. It was a mere accident that the man was found, his weak cooeing striking the ears of Mr John Richards, who, with the aid of his faithful spaniels, soon found him out. The Cassius Claim has again suspended work, the contracting parties being unable to come to terms. If it will not pay the pro- i pnetor to let his machinery, &c, on the terms offered, the sooner all claim to the lease is given up and declared forfeited the better* for all parties. One thing is certain, that the miners here will not be ] the means of propping up what may turn out to be a doubtful speculation. Some new ground has been opened up between Ross and Donoghue's. A couple of claims are oat payable gold. It will take time to prove whether the lead is of any extent. A number of men have lately moved up Donelly's Creek, a few of whom have found out something to their advantage. The same remarks will apply to the Totara, while at Redman's and Donoughue s the few large claimholders are swamped out through the late rains.
