"Per Brothers and Sisters, for Hokitika: 39 tons coal, D Maclean and Co.
Captain Thompson, late of the harbor service, Hokitika, has been appointed by the Governor Harbor Master at Okarito, and proceeds thither by the Waipara on her next trip. If, as it was intended, the s.s. Gothenburg left Port Chalmers yesterday for Lyttelton, she may be fully expected here on Saturday or Sunday, when she will be despatched with passengers for Melbourne direct. Thea.B; Bangitoto, with the Suez mail on board, is now due, and may be looked for off Hokitika this day. She will come on here, and take passengers for Nelson, other New Zealand ports, and Melbourne. On the 4th of March, the Clio's repairs having been completed, the Virago and she proceeded to sea from Bligh, Sound, and soon came in for a strong N.W. gale and heavy sea, which fairly tried the strength of the Clio's repairs. These proving good and true, on the following day the ships separated, the Clio taking her departure for Sydney, and the Virago for Wellington, where she arrived on the 11th.
On Saturday evening, March 4, a public presentation of a testimonial, signed by nearly all the inhabitants of the town, was made to Captain Kennedy, at the Taranaki Institute, by his Honor F. A. Camngton, Esq. _ The following sentences concluded Captain Kennedy's speech in reply : — " I have hitherto been very fortunate, for during the seventeen years I have been on this coast, I have escaped without an accident—but the pitcher that oft goes to the well is apt at hut to be broken ; so likewise, gentlemen, has it been my misfortune to be at last cast on your shore. Gentlemen, I again thank you, and again repeat that I am deeply grateful for the sympathy you have shown, and feel proud of the confidence you ■till place in me."
