CRICKET MATCH.

The return cricket match between the Hokitika and Greymouth Clubs was played yesterday on the Camp Reserve, Greymonth, and, we regret to say, resulted in our men being again thrashed. On Wednesday rain fell heavily, and although yesterday morning broke bright and the day was one of hot sunshine, the ground was sloppy, and as the Greymouth men lost the toss and were sent first to the wickets, this was greatly against them. Our local men made a good stand, considering that their three best men were not playing, but on the Hokitika side the brothers Mace made some splendid play, running up a higher score than that of the whole of our eleven. On both sides the bowling and fielding was not what it ought to have been, considering the practice which the clubs have, or ought to have had, and there appeared to be a want of organisation on the part of our local men, which could result in nothing but defeat. The following are the results of the game :— Greymouth. ;...:"" First Innings.* ' Sftdbntf --'lnnings. '? Mace being captain of the Hokitika team. The captains toss for innings, and Mace winning put in the Grey men, Kent and Thomas first handling the willow, to the bowling of Murray and Foster. . Kent retired for two, and Dunn then put in an appearance, scoring nine before being caught by Hooper in a very neat manner. E. Tindall added four to the score before retiring. Twohill then went to the wickets and scored a very steady seven, when Mace got home on the stumps. Thomas made two, and then retired with leg before wicket. Milburn scored one, Poole three, and Cresswell four, before retiring. W. Tindale was well bowled by Mace ; Strike had no opportunity of batting as Tindall was the last man in. The Hokitika men then went in with Buckingham and Murray, batting against the bowling of Dunn and Gleeson. Buckingham scored six, when Dunn got among the timber. Kit Mace then came $boi; tlie- wickets, r^^-3teSßSi^.tt(e" pretty^ ana Knox was 'ue3sly^owled by

Dunn. Hooper then added a neat thirteen to the score before Thomas moved the bails. Foster \va3 caught and bowled by Tliomas, Line 3 having a duck and Arkell one, and another duck to Macdougall. Lunch was then called, after which' the Grey showed up to Foster and Mace as bowlers. Milburn and Kent both retired with clucks, Tliomas doing likewise. Dunn then made ten before Croft disposed of him with a splendid catch. Gleeson and Poole retired for three each, and Twohill pulled up the game with a good twenty-four. Cresswell made five, and Strike a duck. E. Tindall made five, his brother being very unfortunate, making nothing, Buckingham catching him o\it very prettily. The Hokitika men then went to the wickets, facing the bowling of Dunn and Thomas. The Hokitika team wanted thirteen to beat. Thomas bowled very well indeed, and six wickets fell before the fatal thirteen decided the match in favor of Hokitika. Dunn bowled very well indeed, and was very Bteady considering he kept at it all the day. Kit Mace made a splendid hit to leg, but the hit of the day was made by Dunn, the ball landing at home on the farther side of the street, and would have been a good seven hit. The fielding of both teams was very good indeed.

In the evening a banquet was given by the Greymouth Club to the Hokitika team in Cameron's Union Hotel. The chair was taken by Mr G. King, President of the Greymouth Club, supported by Mr H. Mace, captain of the Hokitika Club, arid E. Wickes, Esq., Mayor of Greymouth, and on the left by H. H. Lahman, Esq., County Chairman. From the first the re-union was a very happy one, nothing but the most generous feeling prevailing. The toasts were not of a formal nature, and there was very little speech-making, songs, recitations, and fun predominating. We may mention a few toasts which were responded to enthusiastically. The Chairman proposed the toast "The Queen," and after it had been honored, he gave " Our visitors, the Hokitika Eleven." Of course, he regretted the result of the game, still "he thought that if circumstances had been altered the result would have been very different." The toast was drank with "They are jolly good fellows." Mr Harry Mace responded on behalf of the Hokitika Club. Mr Knox then discharged the pleasant duty of proposing "The Health of the Greymouth Eleven," which was received with three vociferous cheers. Mr Dunn responded on behalf of the Greymouth Club. The Chairman then proposed " The Health of Mr Lahman, the County Chairman," which was duly honored, aud that gentleman responded. Mr L'lJiman then proposed "The Health of E. Wickes, Esq., Mayor of Greymouth," which was duly responded to. A number of toasts iollowed, and the company broke up aboat midnight, highly delighted with the evening's entertainmet.
