Grey River Argus Office, Saturday evening. The amount of revenue received at the Castoms on goods passed for home consumption to-day was £41 16s 2d. Gold duty, £83 14s 9d, paid by the Bank of New Zealand. Melbourne.— The Argus of the 4th inst. reports :— In the import markets little activity has been perceptible throughout the day. In breadstuffs we hear of flour moving off at well-sustained quotations, Ll4 to Ll4 5s per ton being obtained for trade purposes. A parcel of Victorian was sold at Ll4, and a fair line of Adelaide country brand was cleared off at a similar figure. No business in wheat has been reported ; prices, however, are firm at 6s for Adelaide, and 5s lOd for Port MacDonnell. Several arrivals from Adelaide with produce are mentioned, which will tend to make supplies more abundant. Oats present a firmer aspect, and sales can be more readily effected at 3s 3d to 3s 9d for prime samples of milling. Stocks/t>f maize are almost cleared off the market, and prices are, in consequence, very firm at 4s 104 dto 4s lid. There is a moderate inquiry for kerosene oil. A parcel of 500 cases Downer's was cleared off at 2s 7f d. Commoner brands have also been placed, in lines of 500 cases, at 2s 5d to 2s 5Jd on the spot. We hear of no sales to arrive. In tobacco, sales are reported at full rates for tens ; at the bonds, damaged twist was sold at ll|d to 12^d. A small parcel of American chairs was quitted at prices ranging from 15 to 25 per cent, advance on invoice. Further arrivals of sugar continue to be announced. The Brunetie has reached port with a cargo from the Mauritius ; the Alma has come in with one from Natal ; and we learn that the Edith Smith was left loading at the same port, also for Melbourne. The Wolverine has come in from Batavia with sugar and rice, and the entire cargo, amounting to 1800 bags sugar and 7000 bags Boedhi Raja rice, will be offered for sale publicly on Tuesday next. Notwithstanding these arrivals, the market for sugar is still very stiff; we believe business is pending, and, likely to be carried through, ■which will have the effect of stimulating the market, and imparting to it a very firm tone. The Rene, whose arrival j from Colombo is reported, brings a cargo of coffee to the consignment of Messrs F. W. j Prell and Co.
