ARRIVAL OF THE TARARUA AT THE BLUFF.

[from our own correspondent.! Bluff, March 3. The Tararua, Captain Hagley, arrived from Melbourne at 7.30 p.m. this evening. Left Sandridge at 3.30 p.m. on the 25th ; brings 21 saloon and 32 steerage passengers, and 600 tons of cargo for all ports. Passengers — For Dunedin : Rev Hungerford, Mrs Hungerford, Miss Hine, Mrs Greig, Mrs Simson, Mrs Lambert, Messrs Balfour, Cameron, Simson, Lambert, Reid. For Lyttelton : Miss Compton, Mr 3 Beecher Johnston. For Wellington : Mrs Wright, Wilson, Coates, Wondram, Ehrman, Finsley. Cargo. — For Dunedin, 223 tons ; Oamaru, 27 tons ; Timaru, 35 tons ; Lyttelton, 54 tons ; Wellington, 66 tons. The Tararua leaves to-morrow afternoon. Melbourne, Feb. 25. The markets during the week have fluctuated. The excitement in sugars has resulted in an advance up to L 2 both here and at Sydney, but very little business has been done ; the Victoria Sugar Company sell at former quotations, and the market is settling down again quietly. Breadstuff's close easier ; sales during the week— flour, Ll3 10s to Ll4 Kh; feeding grains unchanged. Kerosene brisk, at a alight advance. The second batch of nominations has commenced ; there are numerous candidates everywhere except at the Ovens, where Kerford and Smith have been reelected unopposed. At the criminal sessions the Chief Justice awarded criminals severe sentences. Ellen Tighe, for infanticide, was sentenced to death. The weather has been wet, and there
have been floods at Sandhurst and elsewhere. Andrew Love, formerly member of Parliament, has been committed for trial for larceny as a bailee. Bail allowed. Pinell, late American consul, has sailed for America by the Californian route, via Sydney. The Tasmanians are playing the Victorians at cricket. Tasmania innings, 103 ; Victoria, 71, with only four wickets down. Sydney, Feb. 24. The Assembly has negatived an amend- J ment on the Budget by twelve votes. Another amendment, however, has been tabled for discussion next Tuesday. Captain Moody, of the barque Tavistock, jumped overboard at Newcastle with a life-buoy, but was picked up after six hours' immersion, and placed under medical treatment. A new gold field is reported to have been discovered near Wellington. Adelaide, Feb. 24. Tideman, auctioneer, is missing, and his estate has been compulsorily sequestrated, and a warrant issued against him. Wheat 4s 8d to 4s 9d. Shipping. — Arrived — Zephyr, from Hokitika. Sailed. — Aborigine, for Hokitika ; and Ceres, for Greymonth. The Annie Brown ha 3 arrived at Adelaide from Auckland. The barque Novelty has arrived at Sydney. The Haversham has arrived at Newcastle. The Wentworth has sailed thence for Auckland. The Tailu arrived to-day at Sydney from Fiji.
